Smart City Projects

City of Huntington Beach

As part of its on-call traffic engineering contract with the City of Huntington Beach, ADVANTEC provided Systems Engineering and PS&E design services for a series of Smart City infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity, traffic operations, and citywide communications. These projects included ITS upgrades connecting City Hall to the downtown area, community centers, the utility yard, and signal upgrades along Garfield Avenue. The improvements involved installing fiber optic cable and conduit, new traffic signal controllers, Ethernet switches, and configuring secure, scalable network systems integrated with both traffic operations and the City’s IT infrastructure. ADVANTEC developed fiber assignments, virtual LANs (VLANs), and IP addressing schemes to logically separate traffic management systems from City building networks, while also implementing cybersecurity protocols and redundant communication paths. These projects played a strategic role in advancing the City’s Fiber and Communications Master Plan and required close coordination with the City’s IT and building departments, as well as Caltrans for encroachment permits along Pacific Coast Highway and Beach Boulevard.
